DOI Policy
Digital Object Identifier (DOI) assignment and management policy for VA-RA publications.
Last Updated: February 15, 2026
What is a DOI?
A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a unique alphanumeric string assigned to digital objects, such as journal articles, conference papers, and other research outputs. DOIs provide a persistent link to the object's location on the internet, ensuring that your research remains findable and citable even if the URL changes.
Example DOI: 10.5281/va-ra.2026.00142
DOI Assignment
VA-RA assigns DOIs to all published content through our partnership with Crossref, the official DOI registration agency for scholarly publishing.
Content Types That Receive DOIs:
- Research articles
- Review articles
- Conference proceedings
- Book chapters
- Editorials and letters
- Supplementary materials
- Data sets (when applicable)
DOI Registration Process
DOIs are assigned at the following stages:
- Submission: A preliminary DOI is reserved when the manuscript is submitted
- Acceptance: The DOI is finalized and registered with Crossref upon acceptance
- Publication: The full DOI metadata is published and made searchable in Crossref's database
VA-RA DOI Structure
VA-RA DOIs follow the format:
10.5281/va-ra.[year].[sequence]
- 10.5281: VA-RA's Crossref prefix
- va-ra: VA-RA identifier
- [year]: Year of publication
- [sequence]: Unique sequential number
